Formula One is one of the fastest cars on the planet, so you would expect the ASRock Radeon RX 6900 XT Formula OC to set some records-and it does. The AMD Navi 21 GPU is beating at the core of the formula and currently ranks third in our rankings. GPU benchmark Hierarchical structure, at the same time for some Best graphics card. As an interesting rhythm change, you can actually find ASRock RX 6900 XT Formula is in stock at Newegg Now…the current “special offer” is $1,700. This is basically a scalper pricing, and we also see it at $1,900, but we are not sure if this is ASRock’s suggested retail price or Newegg just raised the price.
We originally thought RX 6900 XT When it was launched in late 2020, the price of $1,000 felt too expensive, but the shortage of GPUs in the past year requires us to reassess. When the RTX 2060 card is priced at US$600 or higher, the RX 6900 XT at US$1,700 does not seem to be a problem.But, to be honest, it’s a bad time to buy a graphics card, and our GPU price index Shows that the price of most models is too high.
Back to the problem at hand, ASRock RX 6900 XT Formula OC uses AMD’s fastest GPU, then adds a huge air cooler and overclocks the acceleration speed to 2475 MHz-10% higher than the 2250 MHz of the reference model. When you load, it will also increase the power limit to 357W ASRock adjustment And choose OC mode, increase the power limit by 10% compared with the factory stock, and set the maximum boost clock to 2659 MHz. Yes, the way AMD reports the maximum boost clock is a bit strange, but basically like Nvidia, the boost clock is more conservatively estimated, and the maximum boost clock is only listed in the software. Basically, ASRock Formula has a very high clock speed, even without OC mode, the power consumption of the card exceeds 357W.
In any case, we use the OC mode for testing, although the additional OC only improves the stock performance by about 1-2%. The following are the specifications compared with the reference AMD RX 6900 XT:
|Graphics card||RX 6900 XT Formula ASRock||RX 6900 XT|
|Graphics processor||Navigation 21||Navigation 21|
|Process technology||TSMC N7||TSMC N7|
|Mold size (mm^2)||519||519|
|Boost clock (MHz)||2475 (overclocking mode)||2250|
|Video memory speed (Gbps)||16||16|
|Video memory (GB)||16||16|
|Video memory bus width||256||256|
|TFLOPS FP32 (boost)||25.3||twenty three|
|TDP (watts)||325 (357 OC)||300|
Better heat dissipation and 10% overclocking, coupled with a 10% increase in power limit, should lead to a significant increase in performance. We are still working on the same Navi 21 GPU, and the actual clock is more important than the theoretical number on the spec sheet. Take the rated power as an example. In our online power test, we measured 383W at runtime Metro Exodus Under the default clock, 415W enables OC mode. The GPU clock is also about 50MHz higher than the 2475MHz figure, while the OC mode increases the clock by 60MHz.
Of course, the same was true for the RX 6900 XT when it was released. In our gaming test, its average frequency exceeded 2300MHz, although the “maximum” boost clock of 2250MHz is actually not the maximum. But we prefer to let AMD under-promise and over-deliver on the clock, rather than the old way of doing things. ASRock also recommends that RX 6900 XT Formula OC use at least 1000W power supply. Although a good 850W PSU should still be sufficient, we will keep this recommendation in mind.
One thing we really want to get with a card like Formula is something we rarely see: good factory overclocking on the memory. AMD released a special liquid-cooled version of the RX 6900 XT to system manufacturers, which is equipped with 18Gbps GDDR6 memory. We did overclock the ASRock card and were able to increase the base clock by about 140MHz (17.12Gbps effective speed), but this is basically the same speed as all other Navi 21 cards we tested-even the lowest RX 6800.
