Microsoft makes it easy to create a bootable USB flash drive for Windows 10. This beautiful little universal tool can install any version of Windows 10 it contains. Because it is bootable, it can also be used well as a bootable recovery drive if you cannot boot.
This means you can instruct your PC to boot to the USB drive by interrupting the normal boot sequence.Then, by using this drive as the boot source, you can run the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) it contains to repair or perform a clean installation on any Windows 10 PC (see How to get Windows 10 for free or cheap).This is very convenient when the PC encounters problems Blue screen of death Or unable to boot, you need to solve the problem or access files on the boot drive.
In order to create a bootable Windows 10 USB drive, you need to obtain Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool (MCT).
1. Insert a blank USB flash drive into your PC. It needs to be at least 8GB. If it is not blank, please note that it will be overwritten.
2. Navigate to Microsoft’s Download Windows 10 page.
3. Click to download the tool now Under “Create Windows 10 Installation Media”
This will download a file named MediaCreationTool.exe to your download folder. I usually rename this file to include the Windows version at the end of the string, so it becomes MediaCreationTool21H1.exe. Insert a blank or reusable USB flash drive into an open USB port on the PC, and then run this tool. First, it will tell you that this is “something ready”. This may take a minute or two, so please be patient.
4. Click to accept When prompted. MCT will continue to “prepare something.”
5. Select “Create Installation Media…” then click Next.
6. Choose language, version and architecture To match the target PC (the PC you want to repair). In most cases, the default settings of your working PC match the default settings of the target PC, so you can keep the same, as shown in Figure 4.
7. Choose a USB flash driveIf you choose ISO, you will need to write the ISO to the flash drive later, which saves one step.
8. Choose your USB flash drive From the storage device menu. caveat! All content will be overwritten. As you can see in Figure 6, I have many USB drives on my PC, and I will recycle one drive that has bootable media for the old version of Windows 1709. After selecting the target drive, click Next.
MCT will download a fresh copy of the Windows 10 installation files to your local C: drive. This usually involves 4-5 GB of material, so it may take a while to complete. On my system, it takes about 2 minutes due to the Gigabit Ethernet connection via Spectrum. The progress indicator will calculate the entire download process for you.
Once the counter reaches 100%, it verifies the download and counts by its check-in percentage. I will skip the screenshot of this step. Once it reaches 100%-this process may take a minute or two-then MCT writes the contents of the USB drive. When finished, you will see the “Ready” report shown in Figure 8. Click Finish to complete the process and close the MCT.
The process ends with a brief cleanup to remove temporary files and other debris. Then MCT exits. Now you have a brand new, ready-to-use bootable USB flash drive with Windows 10 21H1 (or any latest version at the time you read this article).
Boot Windows 10 install USB
When the Windows PC is booting, you can interrupt the boot sequence by clicking a function or special key on the computer before the Windows loader starts. On my newer Lenovo PC, the BIOS told me that hitting the well-known “any” key would interrupt the initial startup. If I go that way, I have to press the F12 function key to enter the alternate boot menu.
If you can boot into Windows, you can force your PC to boot from the USB drive when it restarts.If you Click to start 🡪 Settings 🡪 Update and security 🡪 Recovery 🡪 Advanced startup 🡪 Restart now, Your PC will restart immediately and provide a recovery environment as an option at startup. Either way, as long as the USB drive is inserted into the USB port when the system restarts, you can boot from the device to WinRE. If you boot to this drive, you can also use it to perform a clean installation of Windows 10 on your PC by running setup.exe from the root folder of the drive. It will take over from there.
On the other hand, if you want, you can upgrade your PC to any version of Windows 10 on your USB flash drive. Simply run setup.exe from the root folder to start the upgrade process, and the software will fetch it from there.
