Touted by Microsoft as the smallest and most fashionable Xbox ever, Xbox Series S There are some powerful firepower in its 2.7-liter case. Digital foundry The mini game console was disassembled today, revealing what is hidden in Microsoft’s creation.
Xbox Series S advertises a modular design, where each component is correctly labeled and easy to replace. For example, the 165W power socket is inserted into the PCB without any screws. As Digital Foundry pointed out, the power of Xbox Series S at full load is about 82.5W, so the 165W unit is enough to power the entire console.
Custom 7nm AMD System-on-chip Band Eight Zen 2 CPU core feature Simultaneous multithreading (SMT) is at the core of Xbox Series X. The chip’s clock frequency is 3.6 GHz, but it will drop to 3.4 GHz when SMT is enabled. Eight-core processors are not alone; 10GB of GDDR6 memory lets it accompany you.
The SoC and the surrounding four 2GB GDDR6 memory chips use a customized heat dissipation solution, which consists of two copper substrates, three copper heat pipes and a thin heat sinkDigital Foundry pointed out that the cooler uses Microsoft’s unique X-clip, so it cannot be removed without causing damage. The remaining 2GB GDDR6 memory, reserved for system memory, is located on the back of the PCB.
Although Xbox Series X and Series S use similar eight-core AMD SoCs, the sizes of the two chips are different. The silicon wafer size of the former is 360 square millimeters, while the chip size of the latter is 197 square millimeters. The reason for the huge difference is that the SoC inside the Xbox Series X is equipped with more memory controllers and a more powerful RDNA 2 graphics engine. For comparison, Xbox Series X has 52 CUs, while Xbox Series S is limited to 20 CUs.
The only user-replaceable component on the Xbox Series S is the SSD. Unfortunately, the owner is currently unable to configure the drive at the software level.By default, the console is equipped with Western Digital SN530 512GB M.2 2230 NVMe SSD and customized ASIC, which can upgrade the drive to PCIe 4.0 standards. However, SSD only has two channels available. Digital Foundry suspects that the remaining two channels are separate and used for external storage memory cards.
Due to the shortage of graphics cards, game consoles have become an attractive alternative to gamers. The Xbox Series S, priced at $299, is an interesting choice for people on a tight budget.
